The Facinating Past of Havana Cigars

So inextricably linked has been the history of cigars and of Havana, that the expression " Havana " has long been synonymous with cigar.

Tobacco has long held a central and spiritual place in the lives of aboriginal peoples. When Columbus made his second landfall in the New World in 1492 he discovered, among other things, native people ( Caribe " Indians") smoking what they called a " cohiba" - tobacco leaves rolled into a cylindrical shape. Early European explorers ( eg. the Spanish Conquistadores ) returned to smoke in the stately houses and palaces of Spain and Portugal. Cigars ( or "seegars" as they were originally termed re: New English Dictionary of 173 5 ) came to symbolize the wealth of the new world and a new status symbol had been created.

In 1831, King Ferdinand VII of Spain granted Cubans the right to produce and sell tobacco for the Spanish Crown. Shortly thereafter, the world famous cigar factories of Havana were established, producing classics such as Partagas ( est. 1845 ), , a, , Bolivar, Punch, et. al. The best tobacco came from the Vuelta Abajo region, only about 100 miles to the west of Havana. Here, soil and climate combined to produce the world's best tobacco for cigars.
Tradition continues to this day, with Fidel Castro sending a symbolic batch of premium cigars ( egs. Cohibas, or the newer Trinidads ) each year to King Carlos of Spain. Europe and in particular Spain, remains the largest importer of Cuban cigars, to this day.
